Scott M. Huelsman (LinkedIn) (Facebook) (Resume)
A native of Fond du Lac, WI, Scott began his career with the U.S. Air Force and spent four years maintaining digital flight simulators at Homestead Air Force Base, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1987. Scott then moved back to Wisconsin and attended UW-Milwaukee, earning a BS degree in the Environmental Sciences in 1991. Out of college, Scott accepted a project engineering position with Olin Corporation and helped manage environmental projects at the Badger Army Ammunition Plant near Baraboo, WI.
For all the science and technology, however, Scott also had a strong creative streak, and in 1995 started his own web/multimedia development company, partially to assist local Wisconsin companies (from the Fortune 500 and state government through smaller, “ma and pa” businesses) but mainly to develop his own “MediaNovel®” or multimedia-based novel, which was published in 1997. Today, Scott continues to develop web sites and applications for a diversity of Wisconsin clientele, works full-time for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation as a webmaster, and continues to dabble with online, interactive literature, developing monthly episodes for his role-playing novel (RPN) “Wizard Reborn.”
While Scott has seen his share of general web site and application development projects since 1995, he's come to specialize in technologies called “content management systems” (or CMSs), which are online programs that display content via server programming tied to a database (versus standard sites that merely serve hard-coded HTML). Scott built his first CMS to develop his original MediaNovel® online back in 1997, created several “content learning management systems” that provided an educational as well as management component, and even developed a grandiose CMS for small businesses in 2003, a system that is still in use today with clients such as the Waunakee Chamber of Commerce. Scott loves working with content management systems, and today specializes in DotNetNuke, Joomla! and Drupal.
But beyond the technology, what Scott loves most about his profession is working with people and helping his clients achieve their web-based goals (especially when they don’t have a lot of time or money). While Scott's professional journey has certainly been a challenging one, he's also had the good fortune of going WAY beyond where most web developers go, and sincerely enjoys the opportunity to share his expertise, make recommendations, provide mentoring and develop sites and solutions that allow his clients to be more productive and efficient. Through these experiences, Scott has found better ways to build and manage websites and applications, the source of inspiration for his company “The Huelsman Way.”
