DNN: Skins, Panes & Structure

Minimize

Copper skin thumbnail imageEvery website needs structure, a graphic design (or template) that defines where standardized website elements should go, such as the header, navigation panel, content areas and footer. The DotNetNuke content management system handles this structure via the concept of “skins” which provide not just the site structure but the overall graphic (visual) look and feel.

Thousands and thousands of DNN skins are available, in a wide diversity of designs, shapes, sizes and colors, all of which can be further customized and manipulated to virtually any degree desired. When initiating a new DNN site (and after capturing the business needs for the project), we like to browse the skins available at Snowcovered.com, an online marketplace for everything that is DNN-related. Once a skin is agreed upon, we download and install it into the DNN framework and then customize it per the marketing/branding requirements of the client.

A key element to recognize with DNN is that every skin contains “panes,” specific areas within the design where content and functionality can be placed. Typically, a skin will provide a header pane (for branded images to be displayed on every page of the site), a left panel (used either for navigation or common content elements also displayed on every page of the site), a general content panel (where most of the site’s text and images go) and a footer pane (that typically contains contact and copyright information). Many skins utilize a diversity of panes, so that content can be further divided within a page and placed in very specific areas within the design.

If you’re interested in having a DNN site developed by The Huelsman Way, you can start by reviewing the myriad number of skins available through the following third-party websites:

Note: For those looking to build a DNN site, do NOT actually purchase the skin! Please contact The Huelsman Way and let us review the skin first; not all skins are developed equally, and some may not be appropriate for particular business needs.
